While colder places have night markets, snowfall, skating rinks and shopping mall parking rage to mark the arrival of the Christmas season, here in New Zealand we do things differently.

For us, Christmas is the time of year that we go the beach and just chill out.   We love our beaches, and we all have our favourites.

So here’s our very special Christmas gift to you all – our favourite New Zealand beaches.    From the team at Portland Software – have a safe and happy holiday season with your friends and family!

“My favourite beach is the large one in front of Mt Maunganui, Tauranga. In addition to the gorgeous white sand, nice cafes, great surf and warm temperatures, the mount towers over it. Once you climb to the top you are rewarded with some spectacular scenery, 360 degree views of the east coast surrounds you. To the south the Maunganui peninsula sweeps away from you and around into coastline that curves to the north.   It’s also one of the best places to go paragliding! The constant warm winds are perfect for flying high and you will always have an audience. After spiralling down to land on the main beach you can relax by having a swim or getting ice cream from one of the many cafes.” – James Bayly

Cheltenham Beach near Devonport in Auckland is hard to beat.   There’s always something amazing to look at – Rangitoto, boats in the channel, kitesurfers, paragliders jumping off North Head.   Hard to believe that this is so close to the heart of Auckland city!” – Hans Frauenlob

“My favourite beach in NZ is Opito Bay. This is a remote beach north of Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula.  I love this place because it feels like I am miles away from the busy Auckland world, there is a huge diversity of hunting & gathering options ranging from pipis, mussels, paua, crayfish, fishing both big & small & on top is rustic. You can set-up camp, light fire, & have a great fun time.” – Mike Denford

“My favourite beach is Mimiwhangata which is just south of Whangaruru Harbour on the east coast of the North Island. You can only access the beach from boat or walking, the water is crystal clear and the sand golden.” – Greg Woolley

Waikanae Beach near Wellington is a nice place to visit. Long Beach Cafe still one of my favourites and offer nice treats for adults. Awesome playground for kids across the road. And a black sand beach with huge mirror puddles was very memorable.” – Natalia Novikova
